The map reports one lecture course, Marci Shore's European Intellectual History since Nietzsche. This page says how it was built, what its marks mean, and where it has not been checked.
Each lecture's captions were broken into claims, each tied to a timestamp and rewritten in our own words.
Connections between claims were recorded with the passage that supports them, then checked again against the transcript.
Names, dates and titles were checked against outside sources. Where the lecture differs from the record, the timeline gives the recorded fact.
Reproduce words Shore quotes in the lecture. They follow her wording, which can differ from published translations.
A link Shore does not state outright.
A scholar who reads the point differently. Named so a reader knows the reading exists; no verdict on the lecture.
The passage in the thinker's own work, by section or paragraph number so any edition will do.
A plain-language line above a dense claim, for readers new to the subject. The checked claim stays beneath it; the plain line is a paraphrase, not a quotation. Underlined terms show their definition on hover.
A comparison she draws between two views without saying one thinker took it from the other.
A note under some claims giving the thinker's own words where they differ from the lecture's account. The claim itself still reports the lecture.
She returns to these themes and people; the arrangement is our reading.
The nine questions are themes of the course. The routes through them, their stages and their summaries are ours.
The rows on the network are our grouping.
The year at which each thinker enters the timeline is our placement.
The pen notes in the margins of the timeline are ours.
Definitions are in our words, drawn from how the lectures use each term.
All 693 claims.
Only in part. Passages were read in more than twenty authors, among them Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Saussure, Lévi-Strauss, Foucault and Havel.
Most claims about Central and East European thinkers rest on the lecture alone. So do a few quotations Shore reads aloud. The reading list and handouts are on the course page at Yale Online.
A spoken survey is full of hedges; thirty words are not. Some claims still read a shade firmer than the lecture.
Who is included, what each thinker is said to hold, and who is set against whom follow Shore's presentation. Specialists would qualify much of it.
The source captions are automatic and garble names.
